A parasite may be restricted during a long incubation-period, however, and rampant and destructive later (Ustilago).

Smut of wheat, Ustilago Tritici, infects the host at the time of flowering.
Brown spots are characteristic of Phytophthora, Puccinia, &c., and black ones of Fusicladium, Ustilago, Rhytisma, &c. Both are common as advanced symptoms of destruction by Fungi and insects.
