In some years three or four sowings have to be made before a "plant" is produced, enormous loss in labour and cost of seed alone being thus involved.
The crop is very uncertain owing to droughts; spring frosts and locusts, and, ' in order to avoid a total failure and to allow time for collecting the produce, there are three sowings at intervals from October to March - the crops thus coming to perfection in succession.
They may be easily raised from seed sown soon after ripening, preferably in a little warmth; and, indeed, a good stock of strong plants can be ensured only by annual sowings.
Sowings in early spring are better made in pans or rough shallow boxes, placed in cold frames, as time will be gained thereby.
