Stephens headed the Confederate commission to the peace conference at Hampton Roads in February 1865.

Here was constructed the iron-clad "Virginia" (the old "Merrimac"), which on the 9th of March 1862 fought in Hampton Roads the famous engagement with the "Monitor."

The USS Monitor steamed for Hampton Roads on March 6, 1862 and entered the annals of history forever.
