Evelyn watched her digest the information.

Kiera had suspected Romas to be independently wealthy by his complete lack of concern for being anywhere but with Evelyn for the last three months.

Confirmation of the fact was comforting; Evelyn would never have to worry about money again.

And, hopefully, Evelyn never raised her rent, either.

It was expected from Evelyn but not from the man himself.

She couldn't help wondering if Evelyn really understood that going to his home country would mean she'd hear this kind of nonsense all the time.

She relaxed into the comfortable black desk chair in front of her computer, wondering if Romas had told Evelyn of the half a dozen kids he expected.

The next two days passed quickly as Kiera helped Evelyn set up her sudden wedding.

The day had gone beautifully, and the sight of Evelyn's beaming, glowing face stuck in her head.

She left the bathroom, pulling on an oversized, soft T-shirt Evelyn had shanghaied from Romas and Kiera had shanghaied from Evelyn.

She briefly considered calling Evelyn to ask about her moving arrangements.

Evelyn might love her but would probably not welcome a call on her wedding night.

Evelyn had a way of ensuring things were done even if she didn't seem to have time to do them.

In the morning, she'd clean up the house and then start working on another painting, the portrait of Evelyn and Romas she wanted to give the two of them as their joint wedding present.

Evelyn knew-- and Romas assured her-- Kiera would be fine.

Therein lies the rub, Evelyn contemplated.

Romas was all business by the time they rounded the corner; he even released Evelyn's hand and quickened his step into one that befitted a warrior prince.

Evelyn loved his game face.

Evelyn glanced between them, uneasy at the exchange.

Evelyn scrambled after him, jogging to keep pace with his long legs.

Evelyn listened and cringed, not sure how she would explain everything.

Kiera bounded away from him and flung her arms around Evelyn, who gave a startled laugh and hugged her back.

She nodded and accepted Evelyn's far-fetched explanations just as she might nod and temporarily accept the equally unreal world of Star Wars.

The only thing that seemed to click was Evelyn's insistence that there were no spiders.

Evelyn looked defeated, and Kiera expected she had already covered the subject exhaustively.

Evelyn sighed and rubbed her face.

Before Evelyn could answer, another thought occurred to Kiera.

She didn't doubt Jetr had reached out to Evelyn, or her friend would never have come.

Evelyn's entourage shepherded her into the dwelling.

There was barely room to maneuver, and she found herself standing on her tiptoes to keep track of Evelyn, who had no trouble with the people around her parting the seas for her.

When she walked into the kitchen, Evelyn was gazing with adoration up at the huge man, leaning against him in a purely anti-feministic way.

Her first thought went to Evelyn's wedding, and another thrill went through her as she realized she could actually afford something nice for her friend.

Evelyn threw her arms around her and hugged her, chuckling.

She'd avoided the galley Evelyn had tried for three days to drag her to and said it would prove they were on a ship after she challenged Evelyn to prove it wasn't a dream.

She tucked in her shirt in the way Evelyn had told her was customary.

Romas had felt no need to explain his insistence of her wearing it, but Evelyn had explained it acted as a visual identifying piece and also happened to open all the doors on the ship.

Today she wanted to see the window to space in the galley Evelyn wanted her to see.

Several of what Evelyn had called warriors passed her in the hall.

Evelyn's many history lessons had covered the strange kin of Romas's, explaining they weren't the cousins Romas claimed them to be at the wedding.

Kiera had nodded as was expected while wondering what the hell Evelyn drank to make all this seem reasonable.

She believed Evelyn's tale of a race of people bred for war.

There were still wars, Evelyn had confided, even though it was frowned upon by the Council.

She couldn't help feeling disappointed; space looked no different than it had when she was lying on the roof of Evelyn's house.

Evelyn's voice was soft.

Evelyn slid into the chair beside her.

Don't try, just accept, Evelyn advised.

Evelyn gave her a sidelong look.

It sounded very much like Evelyn was trying to tell her Romas could marry her off at his will when he pleased.

Her instincts didn't like Evelyn's nonchalance on the subject.

She lay on the bed as she had for several days already, sick of the jerky-like food Evelyn brought her.

For two, it was not just Romas and Evelyn before her.

When John Evelyn was five years old he went to live with his mother's parents at Cliffe, near Lewes.

This had been seized by the parliament, but Evelyn was able to compound with the occupiers for 350o, and after the Restoration his possession was secured.

Under the Commonwealth Evelyn amused himself with his favourite occupation of gardening, and made many friends among the scientific inquirers of the time.

From the Restoration onwards Evelyn enjoyed unbroken court favour till his death in 1 7.06; but he never held any important political office, although he filled many useful and often laborious minor posts.

Evelyn was secretary of the Royal Society in 1672, and as an enthusiastic promoter of its interests was twice (in 1682 and 1691) offered the presidency.

Evelyn's house at Sayes Court had been let to Captain, afterwards Admiral John Benbow, who was not a "polite" tenant.

The tsar did great damage to Evelyn's beautiful gardens, and, it is said, made it one of his amusements to ride in a wheelbarrow along a thick holly hedge planted especially by the owner.

The house was subsequently used as a workhouse, and is now almshouses, the grounds having been converted into public gardens by Mr Evelyn in 1886.

It will be seen that Evelyn's politics were not of the heroic order.

Evelyn's Diary covers more than half a century (1640-1706) crowded with remarkable events, while Pepys only deals with a few years of Charles II.'s reign.

Evelyn was a generous art patron, and Grinling Gibbons was introduced by him to the notice of Charles II.

Evelyn's Diary remained in MS. until 1818.

A selection from this was edited by William Bray, with the permission of the Evelyn family, in 1818, under the title of Memoirs illustrative of the Life and Writings of John Evelyn, comprising his Diary from 1641 to 1705/6, and a Selection of his Familiar Letters.

Evelyn's active mind produced many other works, and although these have been overshadowed by the famous Diary they are of considerable interest.

Next to the Diary Evelyn's most valuable work is Sylva.

A mansion known as Sayes Court, taken down in 1729, was the residence of the duke of Sussex in the reign of Elizabeth; it was occupied in the following century by John Evelyn, author of Sylva, and by Peter the Great during his residence in England in 1698.

His brother, Evelyn Abbott (1843-1901), was a well-known tutor of Balliol, Oxford, and author of a scholarly History of Greece.

Up to 1906 the reports were by Lord Cromer (Sir Evelyn Baring).

It was not until his report on the financial results of 1888 that Sir Evelyn Baring (afterwards Lord Cromer) was able to inform the British government that the situation was such that it would take a series of untoward events seriously to endanger the stability of Egyptian finance and the solvency of the Egyptian government.

Then came (May 1878) a commission of inquiry of which the principal members were Sir Rivers Wilson, Major Evelyn Baring (afterwards Lord Cromer) and MM.

Without that support Sir Evelyn Baring could have done little or nothing; with it he did perhaps more than any other single man could have done.

The Egyptian government wished to make a new attempt to recover the lost province, and the idea was certainly very popular among the governing class, but Sir Evelyn Baring vetoed the project on the ground that Egypt had neither soldiers nor money to carry it out.

In January 1892 the khedive Tewfik, who had always maintained cordial relations with Sir Evelyn Baring, died suddenly, and was succeeded by his son, Abbas Hilmi, a young b man without political experience, who failed at first to understand the peculiar situation in which a khedive ruling under British protection is necessarily placed.

With this compromise the friction between the khedive and Sir Evelyn Baring, who had now become Lord Cromer, did not end.

According to Evelyn (Sylva, p. 35, 1664), hazels "above all affect cold, barren, dry, and sandy soils; also mountains, and even rockie ground produce them; but more plentifully if somewhat moist, dankish, and mossie."

It is at all events abundantly clear that had the Boers not resorted to arms they would not have gained the support of the cabinet.4 Sir Evelyn Wood, who had succeeded Colley as general in command and governor of Natal, under instructions from home, concluded a treaty of peace on the 22nd of March.

According to Evelyn he was " debonnaire and easy of access, naturally kind-hearted and possessed an excellent temper," virtues which covered a multitude of sins.

Cowper-Temple, afterwards Baron Mount Temple, and then to her grandson Evelyn Ashley (1836-1907) son of her daughter, who married the 7th earl of Shaftesbury - who was Lord Palmerston's private secretary from 1858 to 1865.

The intimacy between him and this "brown, beautiful, bold but insipid creature," as John Evelyn calls her, who chose to be known as Mrs Barlow (Barlo) lasted with intervals till the autumn of 1651, and Charles claimed the paternity of a child born in 1649, whom he subsequently created duke of Monmouth.

Called by John Evelyn "a youth of extraordinary hopes," he completed his education at Utrecht, and in 1695 entered the House of Commons as member for Tiverton.

He now understood that the only policy possible for an Egyptian statesman was to work in harmony with the British agent (Sir Evelyn Baring - afterwards Lord Cromer).

He was a good scholar and a keen student of biblical apocalyptic literature and himself "prophesied" to Queen Anne, Robert Harley, earl of Oxford, William Whiston, and John Evelyn the diarist.

Sir Evelyn Baring (Lord Cromer) was, however, at first opposed to Gordon's appointment.

At Cairo he received further instructions from Sir Evelyn Baring, and was appointed by the khedive as governor-general, with executive powers.

Evelyn made a motion to Romas, who looked grimmer than usual.

Romas could have convinced his brother to leave Kiera be, but now, with a blatant challenge from the prisoner, who had dared Kisolm to claim Kiera before he did … Romas trusted his brother, but Evelyn had seen the look on Kisolm's face when he looked at Kiera.

She pondered the spaceship dilemma and how to commission one to take her home without Evelyn, Romas, or anyone else finding out.

Evelyn took two steps back and let loose a bellowing, "ROMAS!"
