In 1837 he became the colleague of John Sym in the pastorate of Old Greyfriars, Edinburgh, and at once attracted notice as a great pulpit orator.
But monumental hieroglyphic may also be written from left to right, and is constantly so arranged for purposes of sym see &c. metry, e.g.
(q.v.), Sym and his Brudir, a satirical tale of two palmers, The Wyf of Auchtirmuchty, and the Wowing of Jok and Jynny.
(i) They may be sym bolical of the light of God's presence, of Christ as " Light of Light," or of the children of Light in conflict with the powers of darkness; they may even be no more than expressions of joy on the occasion of great festivals.
