Farther west came the roads over the higher Alpine passes the Brenner from Verona, the Septimer and the Splugen from Clavenna (Chiavenna), the Great and the Little St Bernard from Augusta Praetoria (Aosta), and the Mont Genvre from Augusta Taurinorum (Turin).
At first it seemed that he would recover; but on his return in June 1863 he caught cold on the Splugen Pass, and in August of the same year had to go back to Italy.
By rail from Zurich, and is the meeting-point of the routes from Italy over many Alpine passes (the Lukmanier, the Splugen, the San Bernardino) as well as from the Engadine (Albula, Julier), so that it is the centre of an active trade (particularly in wine from the Valtelline), though it possesses also a few local factories.
It was also important as the starting-point for the journey across the lake in connexion with the Splugen and Septimer passes (see Chiavenna).
