Skeleton of Mylodon robustus (Pleistocene, South America).
In Africa it is true that no species is known to extend to within some ten degrees of the tropic of Cancer; but Pionias robustus inhabits territories Italian Papagaio still continue in vogue.
The best kinds are robustus, pink, 6 to io ft.; himalaicus, 4 to 8 ft., white; Aitchisoni, 3 to 5 ft., red; Bungei, 2 to 3 ft., yellow; and aurantiacus, 2 to 3 ft., orangeyellow.
The following have been suggested: (I) augur (or augus) is a substantive originally meaning "increase" (related to augustus as robur to robustus, then transferred to the priest as the giver of increase or blessing; (2) = avi-gur, the second part of the word pointing to (a) garrire, " chatter," or (b) gerere, the augur being conceived as "carrying" or guiding the flight of the birds; (3) from a lost verb augo =" tell," "declare."
Among these may be mentioned the hairy frog of West Africa, Trichobatrachus robustus, some specimens of which have the sides of the body and of the hind limbs covered with long villosities, the function of which is unknown, and its ally Gampsosteonyx batesi, in which the last phalanx of the fingers and toes is sharp, claw-like and perforates the skin.
