- Chestnut woods are found in the Selino district, and forests of the valonia oak in that of Retimo; in some parts the carob tree is abundant and supplies an important article of consumption.
- The Moslem element predominated in the principal towns, of which the population was - Candia, 21,368; Canea, 13,812; Retimo, 9274.
- Retimo (PEOvyvos) is, like Canea, the see of a bishop (pop. 9 3 11).
- Retimo fell the following year, and in 1648 they laid siege to the capital city of Candia.
