Pete took a swallow of his coffee.
Probably another greenhorn Pete had to pull out of a scrape.
He finally glanced down at Pete and straightened in the saddle, removing his leg from the horn and placing it in the stirrup.
Pete nodded and glanced up at Cassie.
Anything that troubled Pete gave her reason to worry.
Did Pete hire you as a scout?
Pete usually had a fire going by the time she was ready to fix breakfast.
Pete and Royce joined them, their eyes lighting up when they saw the flapjacks.
Pete sprayed a mouthful of coffee with his snicker.
Pete clamped a claw-like hand on her shoulder.
Both Fritz and Royce laughed, but Davis and Pete glanced sharply at Bordeaux.
Fritz and Royce exchanged knowing glances and Pete merely nodded.
Pete stood and looked down at Davis, who was silently nursing his coffee.
Pete turned away and his soft footsteps faded into the darkness.
Pete walked back to her, signaling to the other men to join them.
Pete was conservative with his praise, so she felt honored.
Pete broke the stunned silence.
Bordeaux paused beside Pete and spoke to him for a moment before he strolled over to join Cassie.
Pete will assume I can take care of you.
Pete would expect Bordeaux to take care of her.
What was it Pete had said?
If Pete had that much faith in Bordeaux, he had good reason.
Maybe Pete and the guys had reached Ashley by now and a rescue mission was already under way to get them.
No wonder the cavalry wanted you bad enough to pay you twice what they thought Pete might pay.
Do you think it was Pete or one of the other guys?
Pete allowed as how Bordeaux would take care of you.
Pete said he decided to accept that offer in Texas.
Surely Pete must have known...
"I always like a wears-it-on-her-sleeve type gal a whole lot better than the sneaky-Pete kind," Fred answered.
Why Pete hired you instead of a man, I'll never understand.
Maybe Pete didn't like your cooking.
If Pete had another name, nobody knew it.
That was why Pete chose the route - less risk of being robbed.
The captain glanced at Pete and then addressed Bordeaux again.
Pete laughed and even Davis had to smile.
Pete squinted up at Bordeaux.
Is that why Pete is worried?
As she turned away from him, Pete winked at Davis.
Pete drank the rest of his coffee and handed the cup to Cassie.
Pete frowned at Bordeaux, who was carefully stacking the plates.
Hours later, baked by the sun and choked with dust, Pete finally called a halt for the day.
He shouted at Pete, and ran toward Cassie.
Pete was going to be the deciding factor, and all eyes turned to him.
Of the others, only Pete seemed to be paying any attention to their peril.
Pete tells me there's a preacher in Ashley.
Did you hear anything about Pete and the guys?
Pete will be out of his mind with worry.
Their food arrived about the same time as Pete and Bordeaux.
Pete and Davis had searched for Cassie and Bordeaux.
Pete hugged her and looked at Bordeaux.
What makes you think Pete is worried?
Bordeaux was the closest thing she'd had to a friend in a long time... other than Pete, of course.
She filled her plate and sat down cross-legged between Pete and Davis.
See if you can find out anything about Pete and the guys.
No, Pete spotted them afore they saw us, so we got away.
She stepped back and waved at Pete, pointing at the dust.
"Well," Pete was saying.
Pete threw his feet over the wagon seat and dropped to the ground.
Apparently Pete wasn't concerned about Bordeaux getting lost.
And yet, Pete had told her to seek out Bordeaux if something happened.
