The western side of Table Mountain faces the Atlantic, and is flanked by the hills known as The Twelve Apostles; to the south Hout's Bay Nek connects it with the remainder of the range; on the east the mountain overlooks the Cape Flats.
The ascent of the mountain from Wynberg by Hout's Bay Nek is practicable for horses.
For administrative purposes the Territory is divided into the seven districts of Maseru, Leribe, Mohales Hoek, Berea, Mafeteng, Quthing and Qacha's Nek, each of which is subdivided into wards presided over by Basuto chiefs.
To Bushman's Nek in the S.W., form the frontier of the province, the crest of the range being generally within Natal.
Laing's Nek is a pass into the Transvaal.
The chief heights in Natal between Mont-auxSources and Laing's Nek are Tintwa (7500 ft.), Inkwelo (6808 ft.) and the flat-topped Majuba (7000 ft.).
The main line starts from Durban, and passing through Pietermaritzburg (71 m.), Ladysmith (190 m.) and Newcastle (268 m.) pierces the Drakensberg at Laing's Nek by a tunnel 2213 ft.
From the port, at a height of 4800 ft., and at Laing's Nek the altitude is 5399 ft.
At In- gogo, Majuba and Laing's Nek, all of them situated within the colony, British forces had been defeated by the Boers.
On the 12th Laing's Nek was occupied by the Boer forces, who were moved in considerable force over the Natal border.
Various engagements were fought in the attempt to prevent this movement, including the actions of Farquhar's Farm and Nicholson's Nek on the 30th (see Transvaal).

On the 8th of June Sir Redvers Buller, who had made a long halt after the relief of Ladysmith and reorganized his army and its line of communication, forced his way over Alleman's Nek, and on the following day occupied Laing's Nek, the Natal gate to the Transvaal, while the field marshal fought a widespread battle against Botha, De la Rey and Kemp at Diamond Hill, 20 m.
After Nicholson's Nek he reiterated the resolution of the country "to see this thing through."
An effort to bring a man named Frederick Bezuidenhout to justice led to armed resistance and finally to the hanging of five men Slachter's Nek in circumstances that made an indelible impression throughout the frontier (see Cape Colony: History).
