Reaching the Pacific through the Strait of Magellan, Drake proceeded northward along the west coast of America, resolved to attempt the discovery of a northern passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The coast from the southern extremity of the Californian peninsula to Cape Mendocino had been discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Francisco de Ulloa in 1539.

There are state hospitals for the insane at Agnew, Santa Clara county; at Stockton, San Joaquin county; at Napa, Napa county; at Patton, San Bernardino county; and, with a colony of tubercular patients, at Ukiah, Mendocino county.

Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake County comprise the rest of the region.

Parts of Mendocino and Sonoma are directly exposed to the sea and are becoming known for cooler-climate wines, Pinot Noir in particular.

This is a coastal mountain region that probably has more in common with Mendocino than with Napa Valley.

Granted, both Mendocino and Lake County are not as easy to get to and you feel that you are traveling alot of backroads sometimes, but the road makes for a worthy journey.
