Cesare wished to marry Carlotta, the daughter of the king of Naples, but both she and her father resolutely refused an alliance with "a priest, the bastard of a priest."
He found Carlotta of Naples in France, and having again tried to win her over in vain, he had to content himself with Charlotte d'Albret, sister of the king of Navarre (May 1499).
In May 1867 he married the princess Maria Carlotta del Pozzo della Cisterna.
His tragedy Francesca da Rimini, was brought out with success by Carlotta Marchionni at Milan in 1818.
Afterwards he became imperial commissioner of emigration to the emperor Maximilian of Mexico, and started building "New Virginia" and a "Carlotta" colony in Mexico.
Maximilian and Carlotta had been forwarned.
