Coals vary much in calorific value, some producing only 12,000 B.Th.U.

The continuous flow method is specially applicable to the important case of calorific value of gaseous fuel, where a large quantity of heat is continuously generated at a nearly uniform rate by combustion.
The gas current is simultaneously observed by a suitable meter, which, with subsidiary corrections for pressure, temperature, &c., gives the necessary data for deducing calorific value.
The latter has an average calorific power of 1732 calories per cubic metre, or 161 B.T.U.
