Budweis has a large, varied and growing industry, which comprises the manufacture, of chemicals, matches, paper, machinery, bricks and tiles, corn and saw mills, boat-building, bell-founding and black-lead pencils.
The railway from Budweis to Linz, laid in 1827 for horse-cars, was the first line constructed in Austria.
The old town of Budweis was founded in the 13th century by Budivoj Vitkovec, father of Zavis of Falkenstein.
Although mainly Catholic, Budweis declared for King George Podebrad, and in 1468 was taken by the crusaders under Zdenko of Stenberg.
After the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War Budweis was confirmed in all its privileges.
These public works were chiefly a canal from the Danube to the Oder; a ship canal from the Danube to the Moldau near Budweis, and the canalization of the Moldau from Budweis to Prague; a ship canal running from the projected Danube-Oder canal near Prerau to the Elbe near Pardubitz, and the canalization of the Elbe from Pardubitz to Melnik; a navigable connexion between the Danube-Oder Canal and the Vistula and the Dniester.
Longer than the Upper-Elbe, but it runs through a deep and narrow valley, in which there is neither road nor railway, extending from above Budweis to about 15 m.
Antimony is extracted at Milleschau near Tabor; uranium and radium near Joachimsthal; graphite near Krumau and Budweis; porcelain-earth near Carlsbad.
Other important branches of industry are: - the manufacture of chemicals at Prague and Aussig; pencils at Budweis; musical instruments at Graslitz and SchOnbach; paper, leather, dyeing and calicoprinting.
Various other projects exist, one for the connexion of the Danube (near Vienna) with the river Oder at Oderberg, another for a canal from the Danube to the Moldau at Budweis, 125 m.
To the Roman Catholic Church belong 96% of the total population; Bohemia is divided into the archbishopric of Prague, and the three bishoprics of Budweis, Käniggratz and Leitmeritz.
