Rhododendron, mountain laurel and azaleas are common in the mountains.

In spring, azaleas, magnolias, tulips, and other blooms are truly breathtaking.

Wild ginger, elder and sumach are common, and in the mountain areas, rhododendrons, mountain laurel and azaleas.

To the front boundary is a retaining wall with well stocked borders behind containing mature trees, shrubs and flowers including azaleas.

However, this does not mean you cannot grow azaleas in clay soil.

Lover's Lane leads toward the Beaulieu River, flanked on both sides with banks of the Solent deciduous azaleas.

This species is very common wherever the hosts, the evergreen Asiatic azaleas imported from Japan, occur.

Missing the perfume-laden air of the Occident, a visitor is prone to infer paucity of blossoms. But if some familiar European flowers are absent, they are replaced by others strange to Western eyesa wealth of lespedeza and Indigo-fera; a vast variety of lilies; graceful grasses like the eulalia and the ominameshi (Patriaa scabiosaefolia); the richly-hued Pyrus japonica; azaleas, diervillas and deutzias; the kikyo (Platycodon grandifiorum), the giboshi (Funkia ovala), and many another.

It is one of the choicest of evergreen hardy shrubs, and thrives with Rhododendrons and Azaleas in peat soil.

Every variation of tint, from the most fiery scarlets to delicate pinks, whites, and dark and pale yellows, is to be had in Ghent Azaleas, a very beautiful one being the pure white Mrs Anthony Waterer.

A Californian species, named A. occidentalis, is distinct from the deciduous Azaleas, as it flowers after the others are past.

Though Azaleas are now in botanical books made synonymous with Rhododendrons, I have preferred to deal with them separately here.

They tend to be symmetrical and clipped, with neat hedges, straight pathways, and traditional plants such as boxwood, azaleas, and containers.

Most plants tolerate a pH anywhere from 5.5 to 7.5, but certain plants such as gardenias, azaleas, and blueberries like soil that's acidic, or close to 5.5 or so.

Both shows feature changing selections of blooming plants and flowers, such as azaleas, hydrangeas and Easter lilies.

The valley below is filled with the richest vegetation, the undergrowth being largely composed of azaleas and rhododendrons.

Among indigenous fruit-bearing trees, shrubs and vines the state has the bird cherry, black cherry, blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, gooseberry, strawberry, grape and black currant; and conspicuous among a very great variety of shrubs and flowering plants are the rose, dogwood, laurel, sumac, holly, winterberry, trilliums, anemones, arbutuses, violets, azaleas, eglantine, clematis, blue gentians, orange lilies, orchids, asters and golden rod.

Peat soil is largely employed for the culture of such plants as rhododendrons, azaleas, heaths, &c. In districts where heather and gritty soil predominate, the peat soil is poor and unprofitable, but selections from both the heathy and the richer peat soils, collected with judgment, and stored in a dry part of the compost yard, are essential ingredients in the cultivation of many choice pot plants, such as the Cape heaths and many of the Australian plants.

In this way hardy rhododendrons of choice sorts, greenhouse azaleas, the varieties of the orange family, camellias, roses, rare conifers, clematises and numerous other plants are increased.

When the greenhouse is not to be used during the summer months, camellias, azaleas and plants of that character should be set out of doors under partial shade; but most of the other plants usually grown in the conservatory or window garden in winter may be set in the open border.

Roses, carnations, camellias, azaleas, pelargoniums and the hardier sorts of plants will do better if placed in a cold frame or pit until the middle of November than they would in an ordinary greenhouse.

Both medicinal and flowering plants are exceptionally abundant; a few of the former are ginseng, snakeroot, bloodroot, hore-hound, thoroughwort, redroot (Ceanothus Americanus), horse mint and wild flax, and prominent among the latter are jessamines, azaleas, lilies, roses, violets, honey-suckle and golden-rod.

Cool conditions and regular watering will help keep potted indoor azaleas looking good for longer.

The forests throughout most of the state have a luxuriant undergrowth consisting of a great variety of shrubs, flowering plants, grasses, ferns and mosses, and the display of magnolias, azaleas, kalmias, golden rod, asters, jessamines, smilax, ferns and mosses is often one of unusual beauty.

Among the indigenous trees are the Abies excelsa, Abies microsperma, Pinus sinensis, Pinus pinea, three species of oak, five of maple, lime, birch, juniper, mountain ash, walnut, Spanish chestnut, hazel, willow, hornbeam, hawthorn, plum, pear, peach, Rhus vernicifera, (?) Rhus semipinnata, Acanthopanax ricinifolia, Zelkawa, Thuja orientalis, Elaeagnus, Sophora Japonica, &c. Azaleas and rhododendrons are widely distributed, as well as other flowering shrubs and creepers, Ampelopsis Veitchii being universal.
